Bible Passages on Spiritual Gifts

Scholars generally agree on which passages refer to what we call spiritual gifts, but there are some minor disputes. The passages do not always have clear starting points. This is especially true in Romans 12 and Ephesians 4. The summary of isolated verses below is also pretty standard, though a few would add or subtract from it. Given this fairly conservative listing, we have 116 New Testament verses that cover the topic of spiritual gifts, making it one of the major doctrines of scripture.

The three major passages

Romans 12:3-8
I Corinthians Chapters 12-14
Ephesians 4:1-16

One minor passage

I Peter 4:9-11

Individual verses

I Corinthians 1:7
I Timothy 4:14
II Timothy 1:6

Other possible references

Exodus 31:3
Psalm 68:18
Romans 1:11
I Corinthians 7:7

***The following scripture quotations taken from the NASB***

Romans 12:3-8

3) For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith.
4) For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function,
5) so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.
6) Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, {each of us is to exercise them accordingly:} if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith;
7) if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching;
8) or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

I Corinthians 12-14

Chapter 12

1) Now concerning spiritual {gifts,} brethren, I do not want you to be unaware.
2) You know that when you were pagans, {you were} led astray to the mute idols, however you were led.
3) Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus is accursed"; and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.
4) Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5) And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord.
6) There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all {persons.}
7) But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
8) For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit;
9) to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
10) and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another {various} kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.
11) But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.
12) For even as the body is one and {yet} has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ.
13) For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
14) For the body is not one member, but many.
15) If the foot says, "Because I am not a hand, I am not {a part} of the body," it is not for this reason any the less {a part} of the body.
16) And if the ear says, "Because I am not an eye, I am not {a part} of the body," it is not for this reason any the less {a part} of the body.
17) If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the sense of smell be?
18) But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired.
19) If they were all one member, where would the body be?
20) But now there are many members, but one body.
21) And the eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you"; or again the head to the feet, "I have no need of you."
22) On the contrary, it is much truer that the members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary;
23) and those {members} of the body which we deem less honorable, on these we bestow more abundant honor, and our less presentable members become much more presentable,
24) whereas our more presentable members have no need {of it.} But God has {so} composed the body, giving more abundant honor to that {member} which lacked,
25) so that there may be no division in the body, but {that} the members may have the same care for one another.
26) And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if {one} member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.
27) Now you are Christ's body, and individually members of it.
28) And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, {various} kinds of tongues.
29) All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not {workers of} miracles, are they?
30) All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they?
31) But earnestly desire the greater gifts. And I show you a still more excellent way.

Chapter 13

1) If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
2) If I have {the gift of} prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.
3) And if I give all my possessions to feed {the poor,} and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.
4) Love is patient, love is kind {and} is not jealous; love does not brag {and} is not arrogant,
5) does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong {suffered,}
6) does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;
7) bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
8) Love never fails; but if {there are gifts of} prophecy, they will be done away; if {there are} tongues, they will cease; if {there is} knowledge, it will be done away.
9) For we know in part and we prophesy in part;
10) but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away.
11) When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things.
12) For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known.
13) But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Chapter 14

1) Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual {gifts,} but especially that you may prophesy.
2) For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands, but in {his} spirit he speaks mysteries.
3) But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation.
4) One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church.
5) Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but {even} more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying.
6) But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what will I profit you unless I speak to you either by way of revelation or of knowledge or of prophecy or of teaching?
7) Yet {even} lifeless things, either flute or harp, in producing a sound, if they do not produce a distinction in the tones, how will it be known what is played on the flute or on the harp?
8) For if the bugle produces an indistinct sound, who will prepare himself for battle?
9) So also you, unless you utter by the tongue speech that is clear, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air.
10) There are, perhaps, a great many kinds of languages in the world, and no {kind} is without meaning.
11) If then I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be to the one who speaks a barbarian, and the one who speaks will be a barbarian to me.
12) So also you, since you are zealous of spiritual {gifts,} seek to abound for the edification of the church.
13) Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.
14) For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
15) What is {the outcome} then? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also.
16) Otherwise if you bless in the spirit {only,} how will the one who fills the place of the ungifted say the "Amen" at your giving of thanks, since he does not know what you are saying?
17) For you are giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not edified.
18) I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all;
19) however, in the church I desire to speak five words with my mind so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.
20) Brethren, do not be children in your thinking; yet in evil be infants, but in your thinking be mature.
21) In the Law it is written, "BY MEN OF STRANGE TONGUES AND BY THE LIPS OF STRANGERS I WILL SPEAK TO THIS PEOPLE, AND EVEN SO THEY WILL NOT LISTEN TO ME," says the Lord.
22) So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy {is for a sign,} not to unbelievers but to those who believe.
23) Therefore if the whole church assembles together and all speak in tongues, and ungifted men or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are mad?
24) But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an ungifted man enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all;
25) the secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so he will fall on his face and worship God, declaring that God is certainly among you.
26) What is {the outcome} then, brethren? When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.
27) If anyone speaks in a tongue, {it should be} by two or at the most three, and {each} in turn, and one must interpret;
28) but if there is no interpreter, he must keep silent in the church; and let him speak to himself and to God.
29) Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others pass judgment.
30) But if a revelation is made to another who is seated, the first one must keep silent.
31) For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may be exhorted;
32) and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets;
33) for God is not {a God} of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.
34) The women are to keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but are to subject themselves, just as the Law also says.
35) If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in church.
36) Was it from you that the word of God {first} went forth? Or has it come to you only?
37) If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual, let him recognize that the things which I write to you are the Lord's commandment.
38) But if anyone does not recognize {this,} he is not recognized.
39) Therefore, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak in tongues.
40) But all things must be done properly and in an orderly manner.

Ephesians 4:1-16

1) Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called,
2) with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love,
3) being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
4) {There is} one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling;
5) one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6) one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.
7) But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ's gift.
8) Therefore it says, "WHEN HE ASCENDED ON HIGH, HE LED CAPTIVE A HOST OF CAPTIVES, AND HE GAVE GIFTS TO MEN."
9) (Now this {expression,} "He ascended," what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth?
10) He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.)
11) And He gave some {as} apostles, and some {as} prophets, and some {as} evangelists, and some {as} pastors and teachers,
12) for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;
13) until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.
14) As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming;
15) but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all {aspects} into Him who is the head, {even} Christ,
16) from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.

I Peter 4:9-11

9) Be hospitable to one another without complaint.
10) As each one has received a {special} gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
11) Whoever speaks, {is to do so} as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves {is to do} {so} as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

I Corinthians 1:7

7) so that you are not lacking in any gift, awaiting eagerly the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ

I Timothy 4:14

14) Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands by the presbytery.

II Timothy 1:6

6) For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.

Exodus 31:3

3) I have filled him with the Spirit of God in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all {kinds of} craftsmanship,

Psalm 68:18

18) You have ascended on high, You have led captive {Your} captives; You have received gifts among men, Even {among} the rebellious also, that the LORD God may dwell {there.}

Romans 1:11

11) For I long to see you so that I may impart some spiritual gift to you, that you may be established

I Corinthians 7:7

7) Yet I wish that all men were even as I myself am. However, each man has his own gift from God, one in this manner, and another in that.

Spiritual Gift Assessments - Part 3

This third look at gift assessments addresses two common complaints. The first is that someone may demand a position in the church based on the results of their spiritual gifts inventory, which could be a problem if they don't actually have the gift, or if they haven't developed the maturity to use it in an organized ministry. The second is that people will see their assessment results and solidify in their mind that their service and gift should always coincide, i.e. "I don't need to fold chairs because I don't have the gift of serving or helping."

Both of these complaints are probably true to the degree that spiritual gifts are misunderstood, but they are not arguments against gift assessments per se, they are arguments against their misuse. I suspect that some very basic teachings about the proper use of spiritual gifts would alleviate most of these problems, and Peter Wagner actually addressed both of these back in his 1979 book Your Spiritual Gifts Can Help Your Church Grow.

He believes the problem of avoiding responsibilities can be curtailed by teaching that clarifies gifts and roles (responsibilities). We all have the duty to give, show mercy, and evangelize, even if our own gifting covers none of these areas. We could make a case for avoiding long term ministry positions in these areas based on our gifts, but not for avoiding the responsibilities altogether.

"Self deception" is the term Wagner uses for the other problem, that of someone demanding a position based on a gift they don't have. He responds that it would be difficult to remain "deceived" if believers are open and honest about sharing their perceptions of each others gifts. If no one else sees a gift of wisdom in me, then I probably don't have the gift of wisdom.

Now if, on the other hand, it could be shown that these two mistakes could not be readily avoided, and that believers will consistently misuse the principles involved, then perhaps spiritual gift assessments should not be used. I say this in principle, but I personally don't like arguments that would avoid the attempt to determine the truth because people might foolishly misuse the results (a sentiment I find to be elitist, because the person making the judgment presumably understands, it's just "those people" who can't be made to understand). In summary, these mistakes cannot be completely avoided, but solid, balanced teaching regarding spiritual gifts should make gift assessments more edifying than not.

Latter Day Saints (Mormom) View of Spiritual Gifts

The LDS writings on spiritual gifts fall very close to what might be called an orthodox Protestant position, although one that is very liberal in what might qualify as a spiritual gift.

Official Church Documents

The Book of Mormon

The starting point for LDS doctrine is the Book of Mormon. In this case the information on spiritual gifts is easy to find. It is in Moroni 10, which is the last chapter in the last book of the Book of Mormon. If you have a copy, just turn to the last page to find the following verses. You can also find them in context from the LDS website: Moroni 10:7-19. This passage is mostly a rewording of part of I Corinthians 12 with a few twists. The same nine gifts are here in the same order. I have them highlighted in red so that you can see the changes. For example, "discerning of spirits" in I Corinthians becomes "beholding of angels and ministering spirits" in Moroni.

7) And ye may know that he is, by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore I would exhort you that ye deny not the power of God; for he worketh by power, according to the faith of the children of men, the same today and tomorrow, and forever.
8) And again, I exhort you, my brethren, that ye deny not the gifts of God, for they are many; and they come from the same God. And there are different ways that these gifts are administered; but it is the same God who worketh all in all; and they are given by the manifestations of the Spirit of God unto men, to profit them.
9) For behold, to one is given by the Spirit of God, that he may teach the word of wisdom;
10) And to another, that he may teach the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
11) And to another, exceedingly great faith; and to another, the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
12) And again, to another, that he may work mighty miracles;
13) And again, to another, that he may prophesy concerning all things;
14) And again, to another, the beholding of angels and ministering spirits;
15) And again, to another, all kinds of tongues;
16) And again, to another, the interpretation of languages and of divers kinds of tongues.
17) And all these gifts come by the Spirit of Christ; and they come unto every man severally, according as he will.
18) And I would exhort you, my beloved brethren, that ye remember that every good gift cometh of Christ.
19) And I would exhort you, my beloved brethren, that ye remember that he is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and that all these gifts of which I have spoken, which are spiritual, never will be done away, even as long as the world shall stand, only according to the unbelief of the children of men.

Other verses from the book of Mormon that mention spiritual gifts include,

Alma 9:21 Having been visited by the Spirit of God; having conversed with angels, and having been spoken unto by the voice of the Lord; and having the spirit of prophecy, and the spirit of revelation, and also many gifts, the gift of speaking with tongues, and the gift of preaching, and the gift of the Holy Ghost, and the gift of translation;

3 Nephi 29:6 Yea, wo unto him that shall deny the revelations of the Lord, and that shall say the Lord no longer worketh by revelation, or by prophecy, or by gifts, or by tongues, or by healings, or by the power of the Holy Ghost!

Mormon 9:7 And again I speak unto you who deny the revelations of God, and say that they are done away, that there are no revelations, nor prophecies, nor gifts, nor healing, nor speaking with tongues, and the interpretation of tongues;

Doctrine and Covenants

There is a 24 verse passage from the Doctrine and Covenants D&C 46:10-33 that is very similar to the section from Moroni 10. One noticable difference here is that the gifts of faith and healing have been combined into the two gifts of "the faith to heal" and "the faith to be healed."

D&C 107:92 appears to say that the President of the Church has all of the gifts.

Other uses of the term "spiritual gifts" in literature

The term "spiritual gifts" has a variety of meanings in the popular literature besides the standard gifts of the Body of Christ. I am mainly focused here on books where the terms "spiritual gifts" or "gifts of the Spirit" appear in the title. The practical point is to help others avoid waisting time or money needlessly. There are four main "other" categories in which the terms appear.

1.Catholic

Life With the Holy Ghost: Thoughts on the Gifts of the Holy Ghost by Rev. Hugh Francis Blunt, LL.D. (Milwaukee: Bruce Publishing, 1943) is about the seven gifts of Isaiah 11: 2-3 (wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, fear of the Lord). Blunt is aware of the New Testament spiritual gifts which he calls "other gifts of the Holy Ghost" on page 49. "They were called the charismata...but which today are generally dispensed with. These were gifts, or favors, or signs, for the good of others..." The gifts of Isaiah, on the other hand, Blunt calls "the real Gifts, the Gifts par excellence, since they are given in order to perfect man in following the inspirations of the Spirit."

2.Protestant

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit by C.R. Vaughan (1894) is not about the charismatic gifts, but more generic gifts from the Holy Spirit such as the Sealing of the Spirit, the Unction of the Spirit, and the Witness of the Spirit. It is unlikely that this usage will be found again in the Protestant publishing world given the nearly ubiquitous understanding of "gifts of the Spirit" as the charismatic gifts of the Body of Christ.

3.Spiritualist / Theosophy

"Spiritual gifts" was a term used commonly in the late 19th century for psychic and paranormal abilities. This usage is also somewhat common on the internet today.

Chart of Spiritual Gifts and Mediumistic Capabilities by Thomas Timson (1894)

4.Gifts of a generic spiritual nature

The term can also be used in a non-religious sense of pertaining to the spirit of man, or just the deeper parts of our nature.

The Spiritual Gifts of a Painful Childhood by Wayne Muller is about the spiritual depth and meaning that can come from painful events in childhood.

The Spiritual Gifts of Travel: The Best of Travelers' Tales by James and Sean O'Reilly is about the spiritual benefits of leaving home.
